Since video files are large, optimizing the video to be as small as possible will lead to faster video delivery, speeding up video start, lowering the number of stalls, and minimizing the effect of the quality of the video delivered. Of course, we need to balance startup speed and stalling with the third metric of quality. In this series of posts on video performance on the web, Doug Sillars takes a closer look at how video is being used today, what we can learn from it, and how to move forward in a way that promotes fast delivery and playback of video content on the web.

The idea behind the app was to facilitate the shooting of 3D video by mounting two iPhones to a special frame — and they did it! In this article, Evgeny and Igor share their lessons learned while developing an app to help folks create their very own 3D stereo videos.

Two years ago, the W3C published the final recommendation of the HTML5 spec, which came with a new set of HTML elements and APIs, especially for video. Most of the new elements have been known about and used for a while in HTML5 video player code because they are implemented in all modern browsers. The specification is stable. Still, the W3C has a lot of work to do left. For Stefan Lederer, the most important standard the W3C is working on is the “Media Source Extensions” (MSEs) standard, which currently has the status of “Candidate Recommendation.” This JavaScript API allows us to generate media streams for the
