C Y Gopinath is a graphic designer, writer, composer, film-maker and cook. His first app, Calcuta, redesigns the traditional calculator using science, research and creativity. His first novel, The Book of Answers, was shortlisted for 2012 Commonwealth Book Prize for Best Fiction. He lives in Bangkok, where he dreams up devilish ideas to subvert traditional thinking, all in the hope of making the world a better place for people of goodwill.
The Patriot newspaper in New Delhi was India’s first newspaper to make the technology transition from letterpress printing based on molten lead to computer-based phototypesetting. C Y Gopinath had no experience in managing such transitions, since the field itself was new, but he was expected to master the new technology and phototypesetting, develop training methods to upgrade the letterpress compositors to phototypesetting and, finally, redesign the newspaper to take advantage of the new technologies. In this article, C Y Gopinath examines how design has changed as materials have evolved, and underlines how the need for deliberate design is greater than it has ever been.

Usually, Numeric keypad Design is an inversion of the Calculator Layout, but why? Nowadays the users experience most of digital products using gestures, not only buttons. In this article, C Y Gopinath explores the roots of this disparity and proposes a better solution. He will discuss how to simplify and adapt a traditional numeric interface to a minimalist design norm by taking advantage of modern touch–driven modes of human–mobile interaction.
