Emotions aren’t a problem to be solved. People are complicated. People change. People are often a little conflicted. Algorithms can have a hard time with that. Emotion-sensing data promises to balance machine logic with a more human touch, but it won’t be successful without human designers. It may be difficult to imagine all the ways that artificial intelligence with emotion-sensing or emotionally intelligent technology, will shape experience. The Patriot newspaper in New Delhi was India’s first newspaper to make the technology transition from letterpress printing based on molten lead to computer-based phototypesetting. C Y Gopinath had no experience in managing such transitions, since the field itself was new, but he was expected to master the new technology and phototypesetting, develop training methods to upgrade the letterpress compositors to phototypesetting and, finally, redesign the newspaper to take advantage of the new technologies.
